A proud heritage

Teknos has evolved into one of Europe’s leading suppliers of industrial coatings, with a strong position in retail and architectural coatings as well. Timantti Clean, an innovative new antimicrobial interior paint, is typical of the company’s commitment to unique paint solutions.

Teknos’ strong technical know-how and sustained investment in R&D has played an important part in helping make the company what it is today: one of Europe’s leading suppliers of industrial coatings and a strong player in retail and architectural coatings. Over 150 people out of Teknos’ workforce of around 1,000, in fact, are involved in R&D.

Timantti Clean is a waterborne acrylate dispersion paint for indoor surfaces that need to be kept hygienically clean. Suitable for use on new, primed or previously painted concrete, filler, and building board surfaces in dry, humid, or wet environments, Timantti Clean sets a new standard in antimicrobial paint.
FERREX, an activated multi-pigmented red lead, for example, was formulated in 1949 – just a year after the company was founded – and rapidly became a popular choice for preventing corrosion. Innovation remains central to Teknos’ business philosophy, with an emphasis on continuously developing products that have a smaller environmental footprint and are safer to use, while at the same time offer more in terms of technical performance.

Still family owned after more than 60 years, today’s Teknos has production operations in seven countries – Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Russia, and China – and exports its products to customers in over 20.

Following the establishment of a joint venture in Russia and a subsidiary in Ukraine, in 2009 and 2010, Teknos took its biggest geographical leap to date in 2011, when it established a subsidiary in Shanghai to serve international industrial customers based in China.

Market-leading paints and coatings

All of Teknos’ core products are waterborne, low-solvent, or totally solvent-free, and have been developed with a minimal level of environmental impact in mind.
Teknos offers a wide range of paints and coatings for industrial use, including powder coatings and liquid paints for metal, wood, mineral, and plastic surfaces. This has seen Teknos become the leading supplier of industrial paints for the metal industry in the Nordic countries, with a product portfolio ranging from traditional alkyd paints to high-tech polyurethanes.

Teknos is also the leader in the Nordic powder coating market, and its environmentally friendly, and completely solvent-free powder products represent one of the company’s key strengths today.

By eliminating VOC emissions, powder coatings help promote a safer workplace in paint shops and can be recovered and recycled very effectively as well, minimising waste and improving overall cost efficiency. Teknos’ comprehensive powder coating tinting system also gives customers an almost unlimited range of choice when it comes to colour, available to tight delivery schedules if needed.

Teknos has invested heavily in surface treatment solutions for the wood industry in recent years, and is now the market leader in modern, high-solids and waterborne paints in the segment in many European countries.

Almost all Teknos surface treatment products for the wood industry are waterborne, solvent-free, or UV-cured. Teknos pioneered waterborne paints for the European window industry over 30 years ago, and remains at the forefront of environmentally compatible, highperformance systems in this area today.

"No-compromise, class-leading
antimicrobial performance."

The diamond standard for an antimicrobial paint

Architectural coatings – in the shape of indoor and outdoor paints for DIY enthusiasts and professional painters – represent Teknos’ third major product segment. Teknos has a long history here, and most of its architectural coating products today are waterborne or completely solvent-free.

One of Teknos’ latest innovations in this area is Timantti Clean, an antimicrobial interior paint for walls and ceilings that offers a winning combination of excellent wear resistance and a high level of hygiene.

A semi-matte waterborne acrylate dispersion paint, Timantti Clean is ideal for enhancing the functionality of spaces such as hospitals, health centres, nursing homes, kindergartens, schools, and food industry premises – thanks to its antimicrobial properties and excellent wet scrub resistance (Class 1 / EN 13300).

Timantti Clean’s key antimicrobial active ingredient – silver – is highly effective at preventing harmful bacteria cells from dividing and multiplying. As the entire coating, rather than just the surface, is active, surfaces painted with Timantti Clean will retain their antimicrobial efficiency in the face of repeated mechanical abrasion and normal wear and tear throughout the life cycle of the paint film. The silver contained in Timantti Clean will not strengthen the immunity of microbes either, unlike antibiotics, and is safe for people and animals.

Timantti Clean is effective against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, as well as drug-resistant bacteria such as MRSE, and yeast and mould fungi. Tests carried out at the University of Helsinki’s Department of Public Health using the JIS Z 2801 and ISO 22196 standards have shown that levels of MRSA bacteria decrease by more than 99.9% over a 24-hour period on surfaces painted with Timantti Clean.

Like the great majority of Teknos’ paints, Timantti Clean can be tinted in line with the company’s extensive range of interior paint shades, ensuring that no compromises need to be made in terms of aesthetics to gain Timantti Clean’s class-leading protection.
