Lower energy costs, better profit performance

Energy efficiency and energy costs are important issues around the world today, particularly for industries and businesses that use large amounts of electricity or other energy. ABB’s Energy Management and Optimization Solution (EMO) offers a range of tools for cutting energy costs and improving energy efficiency.
ABB Oy, Process Industry

ABB has extensive experience in developing and supplying energy management systems for process industries, such as paper- and steelmaking. Similar technologies and solutions are also beneficial to customers in the metals and minerals sectors, chemicals and petrochemicals, and others that consume large quantities of energy.

The opportunities for cutting energy costs in industries such as these that operate on an open electricity market are greatest when both electricity consumption and prices vary over time. An ABB energy management system can typically shave between 2% and 5% off total energy expenditure.

Based on the company’s well-proven Process Data Management platform, ABB’s Energy Management and Optimization (EMO) Solution uses a mix of historical, real-time, and forecasted data.

ABB’s energy management solutions give customers a significantly enhanced awareness of how they use their energy, how much it costs, and how they can optimise their energy supply and energy use.

Modules include planning and scheduling tools to monitor and control peak loads and optimise overall energy use and supply; energy balance management tools to support real-time energy balance monitoring and control; and reporting tools to evaluate and report energy consumption, costs, efficiency, emissions, and other energy-related information, and compare actual performance with targets.

These are designed to help customers forecast their future electricity, steam, and fuel consumption, maximise efficiency through effective load scheduling, and optimise the proportion of energy generated in-house or purchased from outside suppliers. As part of the latter, EMO tools are available to manage electricity purchase and sales transactions and avoid peak tariffs. Simulation and ‘what-if’ analysis capabilities are also included to provide decision-making assistance.

In addition to their other benefits, ABB’s EMO packages are fully scalable – all the way from a single plant or a mill-wide energy reporting application to a multi-mill system serving hundreds of users at sites across a region or multiple countries.

UPM, for example, one of the world’s leading paper companies, has used ABB technology to implement a corporate-wide system covering close to 20 mill sites and two central control centres, and managing 20 TWh of procurement annually.

  • Operates in over 100 countries and employs more than 110,000 people
  • A leader in technologies that enable utility and industrial customers to improve their productivity and performance, grid reliability, energy efficiency, and reduce their environmental footprint.
  • In the pulp and paper area, ABB specialises in energy-efficient product technology, integrated solutions, and life cycle management tools.
