Quick and easy glaucoma screening

The iCare® tonometer measures intraocular pressure in a matter of seconds, and is both accurate and very patient-friendly. Its ease of use, portability, and sterility make it an extremely useful diagnostic tool.

The innovative iCare® tonometer, developed by Dr. Antti Kontiola, is designed for following up and screening for cases of glaucoma, and is small, highly portable, and very accurate.

Compared to conventional methods used for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP), which can be unpleasant or even painful for the patient, measurements taken with the iCare® are rapid and painless. Anaesthetic is not needed, since patients barely notice the very light and momentary contact the instrument makes with the cornea. Disposable probes ensure complete sterility.

This makes the iCare® equally suitable for ophthalmologists dealing with potentially non-compliant patients, such as small children and people suffering from dementia, and general practitioners, optometrists, occupational health care personnel, and other medical staff.

Over 10 years of R&D

The iCare® – together with its veterinary version, the TonoVet® – are the outcome of over 10 years of research and development. The original prototype first saw the light of day in 1994, and the first measurements using it were made the following year.

Extensive development work and clinical testing followed, with the Helsinki University Eye Clinic and the Mount Sinai Medical School in the US amongst others. Following CE approval, the iCare® was launched in 2003, and the TonoVet® soon after.

Used in over 50 countries

Both products have been very well received, thanks to the multiple benefits they offer and their unique design. The iCare® tonometer received an honorary mention at the Fennia Prize in 2005, organised by Design Forum Finland, and won the Focus Silver Prize in the Focus Know-How category at the Baden Württemberg International Design Award, also in 2005.

The iCare® passed another milestone in June 2007, when it was formally approved by the FDA for use in the US.

Today, the iCare® is used by opticians, optometrists, ophthalmologists, general practitioners, and other medical personnel in over 50 countries.

The iCare® and the TonoVet® have been followed by the TonoLab tonometer, intended for use at universities and other research centres to measure the intraocular pressure of laboratory animals painlessly and accurately.
